Saying Thanks Feels Good

Several of the articles across this website are about complimenting people for doing the right thing.  Today I was having a hair-pulling moment.  I backed up my old computer because I was thinking about using another computer.  Two days after I backed-up my normal computer it went dark.  It completely shut down.  I wasn't too worried because I had a back-up computer and I'd backed up everything.  I took the computer in to Best Buy this morning.

First, the young man in Geek Squad was very knowledgeable and promised to do the best he could to save my computer.  He was great.  My back-up computer doesn't have the right connection for projectors so I went back to the computer area looking for an adapter.  A very knowledgeable young lady looked and then told me they didn't have the right part- but she knew just where they did.  She told me how to get to the second location.  She was great.

After retrieving my new part, I came home to work on my presentation for Monday.  When I opened it on my back-up drive it was only the outline.  The 300 slides I'd spent a week creating were not there.  I was in panic mode.  I called Best Buy to see if there was any way to retrieve the good copy off the broken computer.  They told me to bring a back-up disk in and they'd try really hard.

I drove to Best Buy and within 20 minutes the young man in the Geek Squad had helped me get the file off my old computer.  He had to splice things because the mouse wasn't working - but he got the file and didn't seem bothered by my interrupting the diagnostic test they were running on my computer.  This was a second guy in the Geek Squad area that day.  I also needed headphones for my radio broadcast because I realized my "P's" were popping with my old microphone headset.  I went back to that department and a nice young man in that department took me all over comparing the different headsets and microphones and helped me choose just the right one.

As I was leaving, I thought- you know I should have found the manager and bragged about all these young "kids" who helped me today.  I dialed the phone and asked to talk to the manager.  You could tell she thought I was going to get after her for something because she was very quiet at first.  I started describing my day and all the trips in and out of Best Buy and then I told her I just wanted to thank her for such a great store and great service.  She said, "No one hardly ever calls to tell us things like this.  I really appreciate hearing great things about my employees."  I said, "I really appreciate all the great employees who obviously love their job and know their merchandise."

It feels good to compliment someone else and that makes me happy.  Try it.  The more you compliment good behavior- the more you will see it.
